Buyers often ask which stone is the best one. There is no single answer — the right stone depends on what is being ground, how much material has to come off, and what surface the next step expects to receive. A stone that removes material quickly in one shop will ruin a finished surface in another.

The four applications below cover the great majority of what our customers do with our stones. In each case the grit progression and the stone format matter more than any single number.

Turning, milling and planing tools do not simply need to be sharp — they need the edge geometry to stay predictable. That means rough shaping on a coarser grit, refining the edge on a medium stone, and then polishing the cutting face so the tool releases chips cleanly and lasts longer between regrinds.

We see this work done both by hand and in fixtures. For fixture work, customers usually order narrow rectangular bars cut to the exact dimensions of the holder.

Honing is the operation that takes a drilled or reamed bore and brings it to final size, roundness and surface finish. It depends on a stone that removes material evenly around the full circumference — any inconsistency in the abrasive shows up directly as a taper or an out-of-round hole.

This is the application where our own quality control matters most to the customer, and it is one reason we test grit composition on every batch rather than sampling.
